British electronics retailer PurelyGadgets has just picked up the Modu 1, an interesting little phone that can plug in with larger devices all Voltron-like to provide tailored functions. This is the first time the device has left its native Israel, and though it’s a pretty far-fetched idea for a mobile phone, you gotta admire its spunk for trying.
The core unit is super-tiny, measuring a mere 7.8 mm thin and weighing in at 43 g. Separate sleeves let you switch up your phone’s style on the fly, and other products, like music stations, picture frames, and arm bands extend the Modu in a bunch of other hardware categories when it’s plugged in. What you gain in flexibility, you lose in features, though; it only runs on 2G, and the display is a mere 1.2″. Mind you, this is only the first Modu model, and there were rumours that the UK would get access to the 3G-enabled, touchscreen-packing second generation. There was also talk that Modu would be switching to Android, which would give their adventurous design some real legs.
It’s an interesting idea, to say the least, but I have my doubts that it’ll fly in the long run. To pick one up for £129.99, head on over to PurelyGadgets.
