After acquiring Jajah six months ago, Telefonica is finally trialing the mobile VoIP service offering in Europe. They’re starting with Germany, where their local subsidiary (O2 Germany) is launching “O2 Global Friends.” The new service gives customers the ability to make international calls by dialling a local number. Users can choose choose five friends who are abroad and O2 Global Friends will assign a local number for each of them.

Commenting on the new service launch, Jajah’s CEO Trevor Healy said: “The power of an innovative Silicon Valley start-up joining forces with a major telecommunications company highlights the benefits of combining innovation with scale. Telefónica’s global reach, huge customer base and marketing muscle will bring once-niche services to millions of mainstream customers, taking Jajah-powered services to a whole new level.”

Other carriers are also thinking in terms of VoIP. We know that Verizon Wireless has teamed-up with Skype to offer cheap calls, while UK’s 3 is even offering the Skypephone…
