MyTouch 3G Slide to get OTA Android update tomorrow? Nope, not Froyo

Get ready, T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide owners, you’ve got an OTA Android update coming you’re way. Starting tomorrow, T-Mobile will be pushing out the update, but don’t get your hopes up for Android 2.2 Froyo coming along for the ride.

The update should consist of some nice optimizations and bug fixes for the Slide. While I’ve never had an issue with the device – performance has always been solid for me – I welcome any update that may come for the device. We’re all wishing it included Android 2.2 Froyo, but thanks to T-Mobile’s hand in adding even more customization to the already heavily customized HTC Sense, the Slide may receive Froyo long after other Sense devices do. I could be wrong about that, but when it comes to updates on Android, the less customization, the better.

TMONews‘ source tells them:

Beginning August 4, T-Mobile will send an over-the-air (OTA) update to myTouch 3G Slide customers, which will provide a number of benefits, including increased battery performance and enhancements to software features such as Faves Gallery and Genius Button. The update will be sent to customers in staggered waves beginning August 4 and we anticipate all customers will receive it by August 19.

What happened to the remapping the Genius button into just a search button? Oh, that was just in my dreams, I guess. The update may not seem like a huge improvement, but anything is good at this point. As I’d said before, I’ve really had no problems with the Slide.

Whatever the update brings, I’m hoping I will be a part of one of the first “staggered waves” whenever the new Android features hit tomorrow. Since this isn’t the highly anticipated Froyo ROM, it makes me wonder just what “soon” means to T-Mobile and HTC these days.

If you haven’t read up on the good and bad of the MyTouch 3G Slide yet, we suggest you to check out our review here.
