After experiencing a 40% year-on-year growth in handset shipments during H1 2010 with a total of 28 million devices moved, ZTE may reach its goal to become fifth biggest handset vendor sooner than previously thought.
With so many devices shipped in the period, the Chinese company outperformed Motorola and Sony Ericsson, which shipped 17 and 21.5 million units, respectively. At the moment, Sony Ericsson holds the fifth position, but that — as you can see — could change quickly.
Of the mentioned 28 million, 17 million ZTE handsets were shipped outside of China, representing 60% of the total figure. The company has seen 150% growth in Europe, with more than one million units sold in both France and the UK.
The nascent 3G market in China is also providing an opportunity for ZTE, where its 11 million handsets sold represent year-on-year growth of 75%. ZTE has prepared a “comprehensive” range of devices supporting CMMB mobile broadcast technology for China Mobile, and it has also introduced a first model with Verizon Wireless – Salute.
