Previously lined up for September 24, Bell Mobility’s BlackBerry Torch 9800 launch has been pushed back to October 1. It’s only a week delay, but we can’t help but wonder about the reasons, and whether the other carriers will follow suit. Rogers is still listing a September 24 release date, and Telus a slightly more ominous “Coming Soon.” It could be something as innocent as a software glitch that needs ironing out, but if Rogers ends up pushing the Torch into October too, that would be the one day they need to not give out the $30 / 6 GB promotional data rate that launched with the iPhone 4. My fingers are crossed, because that’s a sweet plan as far as Canada goes – heck, I got the same one during the iPhone 3G promo since it’s as close to unlimited data as you’ll get up here.
For those unfamiliar, the BlackBerry Torch is RIM’s first slider, and the spearhead for their new operating system, which features an upgraded WebKit browser, universal search, and a lot of visual improvements. The hardware is decent, but far from top-of-the-line: 3.2″ HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 624 MHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, Wi-Fi b/g/n, HSPA 3G, and GPS. If the slider form factor isn’t your bag, the Torch will be followed shortly by the Style clamshell if the rumours prove true.
