Yes, the roaming costs can be as large as hundred bucks a day. Carriers seem delighted to see you travelling around with your local cell phone number. But you should know better – while you’re visiting the other country, get yourself a temporary SIM card…

Anyhow, The New York Times as a great article on the subject. They even explain the basic differences between GSM, the single most used mobile technology in the world, and CDMA, mostly used in the States.

A must read for both frequent and casual travellers.
