Symantec is going all in with its mobile security lineup, as the company is bringing out a full suite for the Android, iPhone and iPad.
Mobile security is something that most people don’t really like to think about but many security experts think it’s just a matter of time before malicious hackers target these smartphones. We’re a bit buffered from this because there no one dominant platform on the smartphone side (no Windows equivalent) but the dangers are legitimate.
Symantec will be bringing a full suite of products to Android, iPhone and the iPad. This will include device management, device security, device encryption and strong authentication.
“Symantec’s mission is to secure people and information through identity, protection and context, and our broad approach to mobile security and management is a key extension of protection for all of our customers,” said Francis deSouza, senior vice president, Enterprise Security Group, Symantec, in a prepared statement. “By providing mobile security and management for smart devices, we’re making it easier for enterprises to allow their employees to use their device of choice without putting corporate data at risk.”
The company is also pitching its products as a way for wary IT departments to give the “okay” to the iPhone and iPad. This is another sign that the iOS devices are quickly worming its way into the corporate space, which is one of the reasons Research In Motion was forced to introduce the BlackBerry tablet, the PlayBook.
The mobile security space is just heating up, as Lookout also has an Android security option and it has more than 2 million users.
You may have to wonder how much traction these smaller players can gain when the big boys come stomping around. Intel just spent more than $7 billion to acquire McAfee and it could integrate security on the chip level.
