Panoramic photos, love them or hate them, are a pain in the ass to make yourself. What with all the stitching work you need to do in Photoshop, it’s a real drag. Nokia has made this easy now with their “Panorama” application, which was built in to devices like the Nokia N86 8 MP and N900. It’s been ported to support Symbian^3 and it’s now available in the Ovi Store, for free. Many previews and reviews of the recently launched N8 herald the device as being the best camera phone on the market. Earlier this week we posted our Apple iPhone 4 versus N8 photo gallery, and we totally fell in love with the camera.
If you’re a photo nut, then there really is no other device you should consider buying. If you’re tied to one particular operating system you can always just carry two devices. An inconvenience for some, but it’s becoming more and more common. I have enough trouble remembering to charge just one device, so dual fisting isn’t my cup of tea. Speaking about carrying two devices, it begs the question, why not just purchase a standalone point and shoot and carry that around with you always? The photos are better than any camera phone, by sheer fact that a camera’s internals is filled with equipment solely dedicated to taking photos, whereas a mobile phone has to fit things inside like application processors, cellular radios, antennas, etc.
Yes, you’re not going to be able to instantly share the photos you take with you, but really, is it that important to live-blog the dinner you’re about to eat or the funny poster you saw on your way to work? I don’t think so, but I know many people like Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog and Ricky Cadden, who used to blog, but is now working in RadioShack’s corporate headquarters, who love posting pics of the world around them.
