Sony has been talking about Android for some time now and with the introduction of their new television line with Google TV built-in, it looks like it is getting a little more serious about the little green robot. With the X10, mini/pro and X8 under its belt, Sony is looking to put Android into more upcoming products in the future.
“We’re thinking about using Android in more consumer electronics products,” said Yoshihisa Ishida, the lead Sony’s TV division. He did not expand any further as to what consumer products they had in mind.
The company has smartphones and now Android running on select television sets, wouldn’t the next logical step (or assumption, at least) be an Android tablet or a portable media player?
This is all speculation as to what these other products could be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw an Android tablet come our way from Sony Ericsson, maybe even soon as CES early next year. It would seem only natural to get into a market that’s yet to be completely saturated yet and to jump in while it’s just starting to grow. If this is the case, let’s hope SE doesn’t take forever to release the thing, like the X10, which was too little, too late by the time it launched.
While the Xperia X10’s Timescape and Mediascape may not be the best on the handset itself, it may look much better to see the UI on a tablet, which is exactly how I feel about webOS too. I’d never own a Palm Pre, or even a Palm Pre 2, but a webOS tablet will definitely make me think twice before diving into an Android tablet if Gingerbread doesn’t deliver. It likely will, in many ways, but anything is possible.
Whatever the electronics Sony is think of throwing Android on in the future, it’ll surely be interesting. If the company ends up actually making the Android Gingerbread Playstation phone, it would be hard to see how it couldn’t be a hit.
