Google Maps for BlackBerry has been updated to version 4.5.1, including the ability to filter local search results based on review ratings, or how close they are to you. There’s also place pages for the businesses that support it, complete with hours, and comments left by patrons, but that’s been available since 4.4.0.
Google Maps for Mobile has become the standard for local search in a lot of ways, depending on what phone you’re holding. Android devices can make use of free turn-by-turn directions dictated by voice, iPhone and Android both have accelerometer-enabled Street View, so you can view what things look like at ground level just by moving your phone, but they all have support for layers, which overlays extra information, like from Wikipedia entries. They all support a variety of directions, either by car, walking, transit, or bike, and such is insanely useful for any GPS-enabled phone. Even without GPS, Google Maps can use cell towers or Wi-Fi hotspots to find your location.
It really wouldn’t be a stretch to call Google Maps my single favourite BlackBerry application, and if you still don’t know why, head over to google.com/mobile on your BlackBerry to get downloading for yourself.
