Touchscreen Bold Codenamed “Montana”, BlackBerry Storm 3 “Monaco”?

Some rumours are suggesting that the Storm 3 we had seen a few months ago with a 3.7″ touchscreen and an optical trackpad is codenamed Monaco. Also, the old Dakota/Magnum project that put a touchscreen on the Bold 9000 form factor has been revived as the Montana, apparently. It’s entirely likely that the Montana is the 9900 that recently showed up at Vodafone Germany, but that’s pretty much up in the air right now.

We don’t know much about the 9900, but we’ve heard that the Storm 3 will have a 5 megapixel camera, 8 GB of internal storage, and likely run OS 6. There’s the possibility that it will launch with mobile hotspot function since it was supposed to be on the Storm 9570 which eventually got canned. More out-there rumoured specs include LTE connectivity and a new OS – maybe the first handset to sport QNX’s Neutrino OS from the PlayBook? Chalk both of those up to wishful thinking.

It’s all speculation at this point, but it’s good to at least have some codenames to work with while doing so. The possibility that a touchscreen Bold is still in the cards is pretty exciting, so long as RIM plays it smart and keeps it capacitive-only like the Torch. By the looks of the Storm 3, RIM may be done with the SurePress clicking touchscreen thing altogether, but I wouldn’t rule it out for sure just yet.
