Angry Birds sequel will feature pigs

Some of us at IntoMobile are obsessed with the game Angry Birds, so we’re excited to hear that some details about the sequel have leaked out. It turns out that the next game in the series will be from the dastardly pigs’ perspective.

If you don’t know, Angry Birds is a mobile game which centers around some riled-up feathered creatures who are mad at the pigs for stealing their eggs. Like any of us would do in a similar situation, the birds decide to fling themselves from a catapult at the pigs in a fortress.

The game hit the Apple iPhone a while ago and it has been a massive success with more than 10 million paid downloads. It then came to the Android platform via GetJar as a free app and the demand was so great that it crashed GetJar’s servers for a few hours.

The sequel should add some depth to the admittedly silly story and you can finally find out why those pigs were so anxious to steal those delicious, delicious eggs. I would imagine it will be the same type of game play mechanics – you don’t want to fix something that isn’t broken – but Rovio could surprise us.

Sure, Angry Birds may be a silly, time-wasting game but it’s also an example of how mainstream apps have become. The game has generated millions of dollars and it has led to comics, plush dolls and even a movie, potentially.

The feather-flinging game has even had a halo effect around companies associated with it, as publisher Chillingo was recently acquired by Electronic Arts for nearly $20 million. Chillingo likely gained a higher profile thanks to the success of the Angry Birds franchise.

So, any of you excited about this sequel? Why are the pigs so eager to steal eggs?

[Update] Rovio recently tweeted, “don’t believe everything you read… Not doing a sequel, will be something much better…”

Ok, so it technically won’t be a sequel but an extension of the world. Whatever. Just get it to me and let’s hope Rovio doesn’t pull a Matrix Reloaded on us.
