It looks like Verizon will be taking it to AT&T with the upcoming 4G LTE network, as the nation’s largest carrier will be sticking it to AT&T for not having a 4G network.
According to some leaked promotional campaign material leaked to Engadget, Verizon will be bringing back its familiar map motif.
“Verizon now has 4G service. AT&T doesn’t,” the ad reads.
This falls in line with the recent ad campaign Big Red had denigrating AT&T’s mobile network, the infamous “There’s a map for that” campaign. This lead to the nation’s second-largest seeking an injunction on the ad and Verizon tersely responding with “the truth hurts.”
This was met with a series of ads starring Owen Luke Wilson. These touted the fact that Big Blue’s 3G network is actually much faster than Big Red’s equivalent. Of course, the theoretical speeds mean nothing to suffering users in markets like San Francisco or New York.
Verizon isn’t the only one chiding AT&T over its lack of 4G networks, as T-Mobile is currently running ads trashing AT&T’s 3G network. T-Mobile is also touting that the myTouch 4G can do video chatting anywhere on the company’s 4G network.
The funny thing about both attack ads is that they’re fudging the facts a bit. Sure, AT&T doesn’t have a 4G network, but neither do T-Mobile or Verizon if you adhere to what the ITU-R says. This standards body says that the “4G” label only applies to networks which use WiMax 2 or Long-Term Evolution Advanced technologies – Verizon and T-Mobile do not use these networks.
These carriers are duking it out for the subscriber crown in the United States, as Big Red is ahead by only a million or so users. These companies are also generally the number one and two television advertisers in the nation, so look for a lot of these ads to hit a station near you.
