Your Apple iPad is quickly becoming an excellent remote control and TiVo will soon have an app out which will let you control your Premiere DVR boxes.
This isn’t the first or last remote control app we’ve seen, but the TiVo iPad app has some added visual flair which may make it stand out. As you expect, you can change channels via the program, as well as schedule shows you want to record and you can use the tablet to scrub through previously-recorded videos.
The TiVo iPad app will also have multitouch controls, and you can use the table to gain more information on the show without having to obscure your view on the television. So, let’s say you’re really interested in getting some more information about The Walking Dead, well, you’ll be able to pull that up on the iPad without having to miss any of the zombie-killing goodness.
This isn’t the first program we’re seen from the company we’ve seen but it may be the coolest one yet. Of course, the iPad and the Premiere have to be on the same network for this app to work correctly. You also have Twitter and Facebook integration to share which shows you’re watching.
The remote program should be available in the coming weeks for free and it doesn’t look like it will support the other iOS devices or TiVo boxes, but that may change over time.
Is the TiVo app going to be enough to get the DVR company back to the forefront? It’s probably too little for a complete turnaround but it’s a nice move to get back in the conversation.
The problem with TiVo is that the major cable companies have copied much of its functionality at lower prices. Yes, the Xfinity DVR doesn’t come close to the UI but it’s much cheaper for end users and you can get a nice iPad app for that too.
