Many people tend to forget that one of the most important reasons for Apple’s present success in the market isn’t necessarily their products, but their iTunes desktop client that makes purchasing and organizing content easy as can be. Now yes, iTunes 10.1 is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, but it still stands at pole position compared to what everyone else brings to the table. With the release of Ovi Suite 3.0 Beta Nokia is trying hard, very hard, to not just prove to the world that they’re competent at making software, but that their software is so good you’ll want to use it on a daily basis.
Ovi, Finnish for the word “door”, and the name of Nokia’s various service offerings, hasn’t really taken off because it’s being advertised to the wrong people. The kind of folks who buy high end smartphones and plan on sharing photos, using maps, and listening to music, already have their preferred way of doing all of those things. They don’t need a suite because they use the best of breed photo service, best of breed online maps, and so on and so forth. They’re adept enough at using the internet that they pick and choose what best suits them, instead of picking up a software suite like it was 1997 all over again and you came home with a free trial offer of Microsoft Office.
Best thing about Ovi Suite 3.0 is that it only works on Windows, meanwhile the company is pounding their chest about how awesome Qt is and that it enables cross platform operation. Maybe one day Nokia will get software right, they did hire former Microsoft Executive Stephen Elop to lead the company after all, but what’s being offered right now is a bit … how should I put this … insulting to both users and their brand.
