With Fidel leaving the office, his brother Raul seems set to modernize the communist country, at least a bit. Apparently, he is easing restrictions on the sale of DVD players and computers in Cuba. According to The Inquirer, the obvious next move is to open up its cellular networks to the local people.
Cuba has a population of about 11 million, but only 0.2% have access to the mobile network, with most of theme being the government officials. Will Raul open-up the network, or (arguably even better) allow building of a new infrastructure? It’s hard to say at this stage, but an additional income which would come from selling the licence would certainly be beneficial for the economy. Plus, let’s not forget all the people who would also benefit from the mobile technology. We’ll see where this goes…
