India’s Reliance Communications (R-Com), which is the second-largest mobile operator in the country, has switched on its 3G network in the major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and Chandigarh.

The company has acquired 3G spectrum in 13 of India’s 22 telecom circles and plans to launch the remaining 9 zones during next year.

After reporting five straight quarters of declining profit, R-Com is hoping to get some additional revenues from data-based services. In that sense, we expect them to roll-out a whole suite of new devices, including 3G (USB) modems, netbooks, smartphones and possibly even some tablets.

Tata Teleservices (TTSL) was India’s first privately-owned operator to launch 3G services, switching on its network last month. In the meantime, market leader Bharti is also scheduled to launch 3G before the end of the year…
