Wind has been pushing their BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Pearl 9100 in a BOGO deal the last couple of weeks, which now seems to have been mostly to make room for the upgraded Bold 9780. It’s currently listed in Wind Mobile’s inventory, though we haven’t heard a thing in terms of an announcement.
The BlackBerry Bold 9780 isn’t much of an upgrade on the 9700; the camera got bumped up to 5 megapixels from 3, the memory increased to 512 MB from 256 MB, and it’s loaded with OS 6 instead of 5. BlackBerry 6 includes a bunch of new features, like universal search to find local and web content easily, a WebKit browser which significantly improves performance on the old browser, and a variety of user interface improvements. All of the other specs, like HVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G are the same. Check out our review for the full low-down.
In Canada, Rogers, Telus, and Bell already offer the refreshed Bold, but I’m curious to see how cheap Wind Mobile is willing to make it off-contract. It’s also good to see Wind keeping up with recent models, and not being relegated to stuff that’s old and cheap. Personally, I’m still a bigger fan of Mobilicity’s device line-up, but Wind has some pretty compelling plans…
