Sprint delays WiMAX XOHM rollout

I don’t know how we let this one slip through the cracks, but here it is, if a bit late.

Sprint WiMAX XOHM network delayedWith Sprint’s future as a significant figure in the US wireless landscape hinged on the carrier’s ability to redefine itself as a data-centric provider, Sprint would do well to get their WiMAX-based XOHM network off the ground as soon as possible. And, to make matters that much more dire for Sprint, AT&T and Verizon Wireless are breathing down Sprint’s neck with their own high-speed mobile broadband LTE networks.

So, it’s unfortunate that Sprint will be delaying their XOHM network rollout. Sprint had initially planned to launch the XOHM network this month, but the carrier has revised their XOHM outlook for a network rollout later this year.

“The delay of Xohm’s commercial launch is a major blow for Sprint, and the storm clouds are only getting darker over the entire WiMax sector,” said Clint Wheelock, chief research officer for ABI Research.

Overall, Sprint could still pull off a recovery and reformation as a data provider with the XOHM network. The only issue is when Sprint will go live with the service. The longer they take, the less likely it is that they’ll succeed.
