Yesterday AT&T announced the Motorola Atrix 4G, but the Android 2.2 monster will be hitting shores elsewhere too. To the north, Canada’s Bell Mobility scored an exclusive, though they don’t give us any indication of pricing or availability dates. Orange UK on the other hand told us it would be available in Q2. The funny thing about both of their announcements is that they’ve refrained from boasting about 4G anything with the Atrix, which is part and parcel of the device’s name in the U.S. That’s not to say Orange and Bell won’t be getting 4G networks, especially if it’s not launching until the summer, it just means they’re classy enough to not brag about anything they don’t have yet, even if technicalities enable them to.
On its own, the Atrix is an impressive device, with a dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, an impressive 540 x 960 4-inch display, 5 megapixel camera, HSPA+ connectivity (not LTE), HDMI-out, and even a freakin’ fingerprint scanner, but despite all of that, arguably the coolest thing to come with the Atrix is the lapdock accessory. You can think of as a Foleo or Redfly that doesn’t suck. Basically, it’s an 11-inch laptop that is powered by the phone, leaving the dock itself to remain slim and light. Once plugged in, you not only get the bigger screen, but full-blown Firefox for easier web browsing, Citrix VPN for remote computer access, and stereo speakers, all with 11 hours of battery life. Be sure to take a look at our hands-on tour of the Motorola Atrix for a closer look.
Amid all of the CES announcements, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of new toys, but between the lapdock and the high-res display, the Atrix really does stick out on its own. If you’re in Canada, you can sign up for availability notifications here, and if you’re in the UK, you’ll eventually be able to find the Motorola Atrix in Orange’s online store.
