Samsung is making science fiction a reality with whiz-bang AMOLED displays that can bend and flex like a sheet of paper and transparent AMOLED technology. At CES 2011, Samsung invited us to come see what the Samsung Mobile Display division has been working on with their flexible and transparent AMOLED display technology. Turns out, all those sci-fi TV shows and movies showing rollable displays weren’t too far off base.
First up, we got to check out the super-thin and surprisingly bright and colorful flexible AMOLED displays. Thanks to a plastic encapsulation method, the flexible AMOLED displays can be rolled up like a newspaper and can even survive impacts with a hammer. Samsung says that they haven’t even begun to explore the possibilities that these types of displays can foster in the near future, but it’s clear that there is some really amazing potential here.
We also had a chance to check out the transparent AMOLED displays. By replacing some pixels of the display with blank, transparent elements, Samsung has managed to produce displays that offer the power consumption, brightness, color saturation and contrast benefits of AMOLED while allowing you to literally look through the display. Transparent displays compromise resolution, but the effect is amazing.
