Virgin Mobile will be killing its unlimited Broadband2Go plans and implementing 5 GB caps where your speeds will be throttled.
As we scooped a few months ago, the Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go simplified its plans in favor of an unlimited option. It used to offer plans for $10/100MB, $20/300MB , $40/1GB, and $60/5GB plan but then changed to $10 for 100 MB or $40 for unlimited data.
It appears that the unlimited option on the Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go was very successful. In fact, it might have been too successful because the company is moving to the 5 GB model because “we need to implement network controls to ensure optimal experience,” the company told PC Mag.
To be fair, what Sprint (which owns Virgin Mobile) is doing with the Broadband2Go plans is also done by Cricket and T-Mobile. Some may not like what appears to be a bait and switch though, as I know some of you readers actually use the unlimited Broadband2Go plan as your primary Internet connection. I don’t blame you if you did because that’s a pretty good price for data, especially if you don’t need high-bandwidth applications.
The Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go end of unlimited data is just the latest move we’ve seen by carriers to step away from the all-you-can-eat option. It’s kind of funny because these companies were more than willing to offer unlimited plans when we didn’t have the devices or apps to take advantage of it but now that more and more people want (some say “need”) as much data as possible, we’re moving in the other direction.
AT&T has already killed its unlimited plans and the major carriers have also moved to a tiered option – although T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon still have the option for unlimited mobile data.
