Two iPad hackers charged for stealing data through AT&T’s network

Two careless hackers are being charged for stealing data from over 120,000 iPad users on AT&T’s network. Using the carrier’s 3G network, Daniel Spitler and Andrew Auernheimer were able to steal e-mail addresses and personal data from iPad users. They’re now both being charged with fraud and conspiracy to access a computer without authorization.

According to Yahoo! News:

The charges arise from an alleged hacking last year of AT&T Inc’s servers, which affected iPad users who accessed the Internet through AT&T’s 3G network.

Spitler is expected to appear later Tuesday in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, while Auernheimer is expected to appear in an Arkansas federal court.

Last year, Goatse Security discovered an exploit or vulnerability in AT&T’s network and the iPad, and the security firm was able to gather e-mail information from over 114,000 iPad 3G users. AT&T’s response was to call the firm irresponsible rather than patching up the exploit and assuring users that the problem would be fixed.

Lawyers for the hackers couldn’t be reached to comment, and AT&T is declining to comment on the matter as well.
