Android gets Line2 VoIP app

The Apple iPhone has long been derided for not being able to make calls and the Line2 VoIP app was a godsend for those who wanted a consistent way to make voice calls. Well, this app has now landed on Android.

If you don’t know, the Line2 VoIP app lets you add another line to your device that lets you make calls or send text messages over WiFi, 3G or 4G. There’s a port-in feature which will let you switch your number over and the Android version features the ability to speak your text messages and have them be transcribed.

As you’d expect, the app will run in the background so you don’t have to constantly be in it to receive calls. Business users can get PBX integration, call-forwarding features and more for an additional fee per month.

“We are so excited to bring Line2 to Android devices.” said Peter Sisson, Founder and CEO of Toktumi, in a prepared statement. “We designed Line2 for Android from a clean slate, rather than just porting over the user experience from our Apple version. We kept all the features, but we adopted UI conventions familiar to Android customers, and took advantage of some cool Android capabilities.”

The Line2 VoIP app comes with 30 free days of service and then costs $9.95 a month for unlimited U.S. and Canada calls. You can use the app for free calls with Line2 VoIP users, as well as cheap international calls.

The program is facing some stiff competition in the mobile VoIP space though, as Skype is probably the most well-known and it has just added mobile video calls. There’s also Tango, Fring and a host of others.

Any of you out there using the Line2 VoIP app? Let us know what you think in the comments.
