NPolls, a marketing research company, has just conducted a poll of a thousand iPhone and iTunes users and came to a relatively surprising conclusion. It seems that nearly a third of all the respondents have never purchased music on iTunes. Perhaps it isn’t so surprising considering the availability of streaming music services, torrenting sites and the fact that so many have had libraries of music on CD that they’ve ported over into the Apple software.
From NPolls:
This survey was developed with the NPolls iOS App between 17 and 19 of January, reaching a worldwide level. The objective was to study overall music habits of iPhone/iPod users. Quite a few interesting results emerged from the data collected. Criteria of the poll included users from more than 50 countries, with a wide variety of annual income, age and occupation.
The most popular music genres noted from NPolls survey were found to be Pop (46%), Rock/Metal (42%) and Hip-hop (39%). From users who declared to listen to music on their iPhone or iPod (95% of the total), the average hours they listened to music per week was 35 hours.
However, NPolls says the shocking conclusion is as follows:
As mentioned prior, the most shocking conclusion generated by NPoll’s music survey is the percentage of iPhone/iPod users that have never bought a single song using iTunes at 32%. This percentage drops to 25% in the American users, while in the Europe the percentage is 10 p.p. higher (35%).
Are we not listening to music or are we getting the bulk of it elsewhere? Personally, I download tons of music but I’d say I spent most of my time streaming Slacker Radio or Pandora. What about you?
