Verizon HTC Thunderbolt training begins, shows simultaneous voice and data

The HTC Thunderbolt is one sexy device, plain and simple. It may not come with the dual-core innards of the Droid Bionic but HTC always delivers with its great eye for design and custom user interface, Sense. Starting today, Verizon employees will begin training on the much-anticipated device and it looks to come with a surprise we didn’t think was possible.

We still don’t have a solid release date for the Thunderbolt but with training underway, it can’t be long now. Since we initially heard that the handset would be sold through Best Buy exclusively, this doesn’t really match up, but then again, that could still happen. Verizon employees still need to know about the handset, regardless if it will be sold at the store or not. Nonetheless, even if it’s not exclusive, Best Buy will likely sell the handset as well.

It looks like the Thunderbolt may support simultaneous voice and data, something that Apple and AT&T have touted for some time now. Well, Apple has shut up about that, so has AT&T, but it’s still hard to get all the annoying Luke Wilson ads out of my head. No, CDMA hasn’t changed, as the Thunderbolt will use CDMA for voice and 4G LTE for data, so it’s a win-win situation. It’ll be interesting to see how battery life is affected when surfing the web on a call.

So could we see the Thunderbolt as Verizon’s first LTE-capable handset? We initially thought this to be the case but with the Bionic on its way – and likely the flagship LTE Android device for the carrier – I’d imagine Motorola’s phone would hit the shelves first. Who knows, maybe the Thunderbolt needs a head start?

February is almost here and we have a feeling we’re going to hear a lot more of the Thunderbolt within the next few weeks.
