The Apple iPad might find its way into the NFL soon as a replacement for team playbooks. It’ll save on using up paper, but it could also be a more dynamic tool for teams and coaches when running plays.
According to CNET:
Pete Walsh, head of technology for the Cowboys, said his team and at least a “couple” of others are currently considering abandoning their playbooks in favor of iPads, a move they feel could save them as much as 5,000 pages of paper printouts per game.
That’s a lot of paper per game! Of course, the iPad is going to need a lot of padding and protection if it’s going to be used on the rough-and-tumble field and sidelines. Can you imagine a tackle going beyond the sideline and crushing one of these Apple tablets?
There’s no word on just how soon a transition could take place, but one would imagine that it could happen sooner than later. After all, the iPad is being adopted by other industries like the automotive field and medical profession. Pretty soon, the Apple tablet will also become commonplace in educational institutions, too.
If the NFL decides to pick up the iPad as playbooks en masse, how long before other sports teams do the same for various purposes? The Apple tablet is certainly a dynamic and capable device, so it just might be a matter of time before we see it in coaches’ hands everywhere.
