It’s been a while since the CyanogenMod team began working on the next version of their popular custom ROM, CyanogenMod 7. This Gingerbread-toting ROM has been available in the form of ‘nightlies‘, which are development builds that almost certainly will give you bugs. Luckily, the Nexus One, T-Mobile G2, MyTouch 4G, and EVO 4G now have the very first release candidate!
The RC1 will be more stable than other CM7 ROMs, but issues could still remain. There may be a handful of other release candidates to follow this particular build, but we’re just glad to see that progress is being made and that the build is becoming more stable.
Hopefully we’ll be seeing some more release candidates for other handsets soon, but those sporting a MyTouch 4G, G2, EVO, or still clutching to Nexus Ones are probably feeling pretty good right now.
This RC1 is based on Android 2.3.2, but with the recent update to the SDK we may see Android 2.3.3 pop up in no time. That said, none of the above handsets have NFC chips, so CyanogenMod could just go straight to Ice Cream Sandwich, whenever it decides to show up.
Who’s ready for some Gingerbread?
