GetJar, which is touted as the “world’s largest open app store,” raised $25 million in Series C funding from Tiger Global Management. Existing investor from series A and B rounds Accel Partners will also participate in the series C funding.
The company said it will use the new money to support its rapid growth by expanding sales, marketing and engineering initiatives. GetJar will primarily focus on expanding its offering to Android publishers to secure its position as the premier “open” Android Market alternative while continuing to support other smartphone platforms such as Blackberry and iOS — though I’m not sure how they support iPhone apps.
In the past year, GetJar established partnerships with companies such as Yahoo!, Sprint, AT&T, Openwave, Rovio (developer of Angry Birds), Zynga and Glu Mobile, quadrupling the number of downloads per month as a result.
