Apple details differences between CDMA and GSM iPhones

Wondering what’s the difference between the iPhone 4 offered by AT&T and the one Verizon sells? You may know that the former runs on GSM, whereas the latter on a CDMA-based network, but what that means exactly? For one thing, you can’t get simultaneous voice and data with Verizon’s iPhone, meaning that your app updates stop when you’re on a call.

Similarly, the Verizon iPhone is unable to hold a conference call with more than two attendees, and it also can’t put a call on hold. Enabling call forwarding, call waiting and caller ID with AT&T’s iPhone is as easy as changing a setting within the iOS, whereas folks with Verizon contract will have to do the same manually.

In a nutshell, we’re not talking about issues most users would put on their “biggie” list, but some others may insist on the convenience offered by AT&T’s version of the device. Having your email delivered even while you’re making a phone call is cool, but then again – having a decent signal is even cooler. 😉
