When Motorola and AT&T announced the Atrix 4G during CES 2011, they touted it as the most technologically advanced smartphone in the market today. It has a dual-core processor, runs Android 2.2 Froyo, docks onto and powers a laptop and is equipped to handle AT&T’s HSPA+ “4G” network. However, it seems that the latter might actually be a bit misleading.
According to one frustrated AT&T user, the carrier is capping the device at just 300Kbps, which is much slower than the iPhone 4’s average 1.5Mbps. It’s hard to imagine that this is strictly a carrier issue, however, and might have something to do with the Atrix 4G’s software.
The user says:
Unfortunately, since owning this phone I have been experiencing very slow data speeds and have been losing the Internet connection especially in times when I really needed to find directions or look up information. I have contacted AT&T and was told that everything is fine and that the network in my area is working the way it is supposed to but it isn’t the case. [sic]
It wouldn’t be the first device on the market that has had problems interfacing with the data network. When the Nexus One was first released, many users were unable to connect to T-Mobile’s 3G data network. Last summer, iPhone users were noticing that upload speeds on AT&T’s network were dramatically reduced, but the issue was later explained and resolved by AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent.
It’s hard to say what might be causing tThis is the main REASON I strarted this petition: Can AT&T explain to us why our upload speeds can’t go over the 300kpbs mark while other phones such as the iPhone 4 have upload speeds 4 to 10 times faster than the Atrix 4G? Don’t we PAY the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY for your data plans? STOP CAPPING UPLOAD SPEEDS !!! [sic]
