So you thought that Verizon would be slowing their Android lineup now it has the iPhone 4? That doesn’t seem to be the case, as two new phones have been spotted in the wild, the Droid 3, and the LTE-toting Targa. We also caught another glimpse at the upcoming Droid X 2.
One thing that you’ll notice right off the bat about these devices is that they don’t really escape the “Droid” design aesthetic. This is likely intentional, but even with better specs under the hood, the Droid lineup is beginning to look a bit boring. Nonetheless, the Droid family made Android what it is today, since it seems to be working out for both Motorola and Verizon, why would they change it?
Targa –
The picture above of the Targa looks to be nothing more than a simple render, but of the three devices, the design on this particular handset is the most interesting. Taking cues from the Droid X‘s design, the Targa sports a hump on the back of it, but it’s much smoother than the X. This will be an LTE device that should sit nicely alongside the Thunderbolt and Bionic.
There’s little known about the handset outside of the render, but we can expect a large display, dual-cameras, and hopefully some dual-core innards.
Droid 3 –
If the Droid 2 wasn’t good enough for you, maybe the next version will be. While it could be the angle of the photo, the screen looks a bit larger than its predecessor. The screen also looks to be thinner, which will hopefully shave a couple of ounces off of the handset’s weight. With no shots of the keyboard, it still remains to be seen if Motorola has redesigned it, but the D2’s keyboard layout was much more thumb-friendly than the original, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the D3’s keyboard layout remains the same.
Droid X 2 –
We’ve seen this handset before, but this time around its sporting a new model number, the MB870. We can also tell that the DX2 will be running Android 2.2.1 with Motoblur, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the handset caught some Gingerbread action when it launches.
Since we know very little at this point about the handsets, it seems to be a bit underwhelming right now. That said, for all we know all three handsets could be sporting dual-core processors and qHD displays, which would perk our ears right up. Verizon and Motorola are a good team, and hopefully this upcoming arsenal of handsets will prove just that.
