HTC LogoAccording to a report out of Digitimes, HTC will acquire 82 approved patents and 14 pending patent applications from ADC Telecommunications. ADC is a global telecommunications company headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The Taiwanese manufacturer will pay $75 million for this intellectual property which covers wireless communication technologies. HTC will reportedly use these patents to develop technology for its 4G smartphone which currently include the Verizon Wireless Thunderbolt and the AT&T Atrix 4G.

While these patents protects against future legal threats, they may not be applicable to current legal skirmishes in which the Taiwanese company is involved. HTC is fighting a legal battle against Apple with the two companies filing reciprocal patent infringement lawsuits against each other. The handset manufacturer also faces another recent patent infringement lawsuit filed by SIM card manufacturer Gemalto.
