It may have taken a while, but Samsung Fascinate users can finally get a taste of Android 2.2 Froyo that it’s had coming to it for some time now. The roll out of the OTA update is underway, but it may be a couple of days before it hits all handsets.
The Fascinate has been languishing on Android 2.1 for far too long now, and with the new update, users will finally get a taste of one of the best, yet now aging, versions of the Android operating system. It may not be Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but Froyo is one of the biggest updates the OS has even seen in its short lifetime, and one shouldn’t even consider a handset running anything below it at this point in the game.
Fascinate users will soon be able to take advantage of Adobe Flash support, enhanced JavaScript performance in the browser, as well at the JIT (Just In Time) compiler, which gives the entire system a nice speed bump throughout. In addition to the Froyo features, the Fascinate will also see a couple of tweaks to improve Samsung’s TouchWiz skin, many of which are subtle, but lend to a more seamless experience. Hopefully not too seamless.
While it may not be the powerhouse of a phone like the Thunderbolt, the Fascinate is still a nice device. The Super AMOLED display is a dream to look at, and while we prefer a faster processor now, the Hummingbird found in the Galaxy S devices is still very snappy. We’d imagine that the CPU wouldn’t have graced the Nexus S, otherwise.
Finally, all original Galaxy S devices in the US are on Android 2.2 Froyo, in one form or another. As far as Gingerbread is concerned, well, it could take a while before the update sees the light of day.
For now, Fascinate users, get ready to get your Froyo on.
