PhoneTag, a location sharing service for iPhone (not a voicemail transcription service or Bluetooth key fob), has recently made the jump to BlackBerry. What sets PhoneTag apart from the plethora of location-sharing apps currently available, like Google Latitude or Foursquare, is that PhoneTag lets you pick how long you share your location status, since it’s tied tor a particular set of contacts for a specific event. You can use the app to designate and find directions to the final destination, or move it somewhere else for when plans change. If you’re willing to put down some money, PhoneTag is also an instant messaging client, so you can coordinate with friends as they’re en route. Contacts can be organized into groups, or if you’re feeling a little more open, you can share your location with Facebook or Twitter.
It’s an interesting take on the social location app, and definitely well-tailored for those who regularly meet up with a bunch of scattered friends. The one caveat is having friends who are tech-savvy enough to use this kind of app, or even have a smartphone. In any case, the app is free, so it’s hard to go wrong; go ahead and download PhoneTag from the BlackBerry App World here. I couldn’t register an account using my Torch, but maybe you’ll have better luck.
