In a move designed to cut consumer costs on international text messages, Rebtel introduced ToIP (Text-over-IP) a new texting service that allows for SMS through local numbers over Internet, while also giving large SMS application providers a way to extend savings to their customers.

To start using the service, users should register at Rebtel’s website, enter their mobile phone number and a number of a person they like to keep in touch often. Rebtel on its end will create a local number where you live and send it in a text message to your phone. You should save this number to your address book and use it at any time to send SMS or call the person you defined in the registration process to save at least 50% from regular operators’ costs.

Moreover, the company has also unveiled a new API, enabling other messaging companies and some carriers to offer the same service to their customers.

When compared to major U.S. carrier, Rebtel ToIP is up to 92.5% less expensive than the going rate offered by Sprint, and up to 93% cheaper than AT&T and Verizon…
