HP Pre 3 Passes FCC with webOS 2.3

HP’s new webOS hardware has started to trickle out to carriers, with signs of the adorably tiny Veer coming to AT&T on May 2. While we still haven’t heard anything specific about the larger Pre 3’s launch date (or the TouchPad tablet, for that matter),  the GSM smartphone has crossed the FCC filing system, which suggests we’ll see it on AT&T soon as well. The documentation says it’s running webOS 2.3, which isn’t a build we’ve seen or heard much of.

The Pre 3 has a respectable set of specs and a distinct operating system that has a good shot at winning at least a few hearts. It packs a 1.4 GHz processor, bumps up the screen resolution and size from the Pre 2 to 3.6 inches and WVGA; the camera clocks in at 5 megapixels with LED flash, and will have either 8 or 16 GB of local storage, depending on model. All of the usual stuff, like Wi-Fi b/g/n with mobile hotspot, GPS, 3G, and Bluetooth are included. We got some hands-on time at Mobile World Congress if you want to take a look.

Personally, I’m looking forward to what HP does with webOS in the long run, and another alternative in the emerging tablet field is always welcome, especially when it involves such a polished user interface and a few unique tricks like tap-to-share.
