One app to make its debut at BlackBerry World last week was Unsubscribe. They’ve been getting cozy with desktop e-mail through Outlook and Gmail since late last year, and are now moving into mobile starting with BlackBerry. While any decent e-mail-based marketing not caught by your built-in spam filter will offer an “unsubscribe me” link, they aren’t always as conclusive as you might like. By getting Unsubscribe, they do the heavy lifting for you, and go right to e-commerce companies to get your name off their mailing lists. On BlackBerry, the app is entirely seamless – it simply adds an “Unsubscribe” option in the system menu when you’re looking at your e-mail.
Unsubscribe is careful to note the difference between traditional spam and the new wave of seemingly-legitimate e-marketing, which they’ve dubbed “Bacon”. While I’m not sure that I can condone associating such a delicious foodstuff with something as distasteful as e-mail marketers, the idea has produced a pretty hilarious infographic on the rise of the practice (see the whole thing after the jump).
The only downside is that Unsubscribe is subscription-based, so you’ll be paying $2.95/month, $19.95/year, or $149.99 for a lifetime subscription. Personally, I don’t have much of an issue with spam, and actually find my default spam filter blocks a lot of legitimate messages, so Unsubscribe is likely overkill for my particular situation, but if spam is a problem for you, head over to their site to sign up.
