Seagate GoFlex WiFi hard drive streams media to your deviceIf you’re like me, you like to use your smartphone or tablet as a media device but you may sometimes run into the storage limit on the device. Well friends, Seagate is trying to solve that problem by introducing the GoFlex Satellite hard drive and this WiFi-enabled storage device is designed to augment iOS and other phones.

The WiFi hard drive will have 500 GB of space and 802.11b/g/n connectivity. You can download the GoFlex app to connect to your iOS device and you’ll be able to stream audio, video and other content to your devices.

An Android app for Android is expected in the summer but you can also access the WiFi hard drive via a browser.

“With the GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage, we wished to create an elegant solution that provides real value to the multitude of iPad users out there by delivering a seamless connection to local storage,” said Patrick Connolly, VP at Seagate, in a prepared statement. “No longer will a consumer feel as though it is a compromise to purchase a lower capacity tablet or iPad. With GoFlex Satellite, people will be able to carry their entire media library with them without the need for wires or the web at a fraction of the cost of adding 3G or purchasing or a higher capacity tablet.”

The WiFi hard drive from Seagate could be extremely useful for an iPad or a tablet, as many people opt for the lowest model just to save a few bucks and find themselves hit with the storage limitation later as one adds more apps and content. I know my 16 GB iPad quickly fills up if I’m loading it up with movies.

A neat thing about the WiFi hard drive is that it will also enable a progressive download feature through the iOS app, so the drive can go into a stand-by mode. I’ve hit the company up for a review unit, so I’ll hopefully have more for you soon.

The GoFlex Satellite WiFi hard drive is available now for about $199.99.
