Pioneer AppRadio connects your iPhone with your car

Pioneer is continuing its love affair with Apple by introducing the AppRadio in-car entertainment system which will let users utilize the connectivity, apps and processing power of the iPhone or iPod touch.

The AppRadio in-car unit features a 6.1-inch touchscreen with a WVGA (800 x 480) resolution which you can easily connect your phone to via Bluetooth. That Bluetooth functionality will work with nearly any phone that’s capable and this will enable hands-free calling.

The real magic happens when you connect your iOS device and the AppRadio app, as this will let you access your playlists, as well as use a few apps in your car. Some of the compatible apps include Pandora and Google Maps.

“Pioneer is rethinking connectivity by tapping into the power of the smartphone, while simultaneously providing a solution that safely merges the consumer’s connected lifestyle into the vehicle,” said Ted Cardenas, director of marketing for the car electronics division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., in a prepared statement. “AppRadio fully embraces the iPhone, which has become the window to our mobile connectivity and provides a comprehensive and safer way to use apps in the car.”

There’s also a 30-pin connector for direct connections and the AppRadio unit will be available in late June for less than $500. This is just the latest example of cars utilizing advances in smartphone technology to augment the vehicle. Ford has been on the tip of the spear with this type of technology and other companies will undoubtedly jump on board.
