We just got word about the June 9th event in New York City where Motorola and Sprint are to take the wraps off of a new device. While we haven’t seen the device yet, we just found out a good chunk of information about it and looks to be similar to AT&T’s Atrix 4G.
Apparently the device will take a few cues from the Motorola Atrix 4G by offering a laptop dock to “enhance” your mobile computing experience. With a name like Photon 4G, you can expect to see WiMAX support on the handset as well as a 4.3 inch qHD display with a resolution of 540 x 960, 8 megapixel camera, 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, soft-grip backing with a metal kickstand, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The handset will also feature the latest version of Motoblur, which is much more refined than previous versions but doesn’t bring a lot to the table we haven’t seen before.
The Photon 4G is expected to ship sometime in July, possibly to give the EVO 3D some breathing room if the June release date turns out to be true. This will be Motorola’s first dual-core phone for the carrier and while we question how popular the laptop dock accessory will be, the handset itself will be a nice option to have if you’re not sold on the 3D part of the next EVO device.
The Photon 4G may not be the only device that will be announced during the June 9th event, and we may see the Motorola Xoom with WiMAX support announced as well. While the Honeycomb tablet is still a bit on the pricey side, having WiMAX immediately available would be a great way to advertise against Verizon’s version that’s still awaiting its LTE upgrade.
