Following in the footsteps of some other carriers out there, Verizon Wireless will be introducing tiered data plans starting on July 7th, just like we were expecting. Verizon’s offerings are slightly more expensive than AT&T’s tiered data plans, but with a faster 4G network and better coverage, Big Red’s new plans will likely give you more bang for your buck.
Verizon’s new pricing structure will break down like this:
- 2GB – $30/month
- 5GB – $50/month
- 10GB – $80/month
Data plans w/ tethering:
- 4GB – $50/month
- 7GB – $70/month
- 12GB – $100/month
If you compare these rates with AT&T’s tiered data plans, you’ll find Verizon’s are $5 more expensive across the board. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise as Verizon exceeds AT&T virtually everywhere, including price. What’s $5 more for a service that will be faster and more reliable?
If you’re currently on a contract with Verizon, this shouldn’t concern you as these rates will only be applied to new customers. Those still under contract will still be able to keep unlimited data if you’re currently holding onto it, so worry not.
Of course, overage fees apply with the new plans. If you exceed your data cap a $10 charge will be applied to your monthly bill for every 1GB exceeded, which sounds reasonable enough, but that could be easier than it seems. We’d pick a $10 charge over data throttling any day, though, especially when it’s stupid fast.
Luckily, the new rates apply to both 3G and 4G devices, so you won’t have to pay up more money for your brand new LG Revolution you just bought. Verizon already charges a premium for its LTE devices so an increased rate plan would be a bit of a turn off.
