For years, the possibility of a Verizon iPhone was all the rage, and when it finally came to existence in February this year, sales were a little more tepid than expected. However, it has done consistently well and some are arguing that it has been responsible for slowing the growth of Android sales for the carrier. However, sales might have finally tapered off, or dropped altogether, during Q2 2011.
BusinessWeek reports:
“IPhone sales will likely be a touch below the 2.2 million” Verizon sold in the first quarter, said [Goldman Sachs analyst] Jason Armstrong in a research note. Verizon began sales of the smartphone Feb. 3, more than a month into the first quarter.
Verizon declined to comment on the matter, but it makes sense that iPhone sales would have dropped off a bit. Those who wanted a Verizon iPhone would have gotten in on it early, and with rumors that the new iPhone 5 is coming this September, VZW customers who haven’t picked up the Apple smartphone yet might be waiting for the next version.
It might also have to do with the increasing popularity of the carrier’s Android offerings, a few of which are compatible with Verizon’s fast LTE network. Its 4G LTE network has proven to be the fastest mobile broadband solution in the U.S., and offers speeds comparable to cable broadband. The HTC Thunderbolt and Droid Charge are among the few smartphones that would appeal to mobile data junkies given their 4G compatibilities, whereas the iPhone is feeling more antiquated being a year old and only 3G-capable.
Did you buy a Verizon iPhone recently? If so, what are your thoughts on it? And if not, are you waiting for the next iteration of the Apple smartphone? Feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
