Elbert Perez, who 4 months ago left the safety of his day job to start developing Windows Phone games full time, recently noticed that two as yet to be announced Windows Phones have been using his apps, the Nokia 800 and Acer M310. No word as to what sort of specifications these devices have, we just know the names. The Nokia 800 falls in line with Nokia’s new naming scheme of an easy to remember three digit number. Considering the first of such newly named devices to come out was the $215 Nokia 500, and assuming that 900 is reserved for the crème de la crème, that would imply that Nokia’s first Windows Phone isn’t going to be the blow your pants off type device we were expecting it to be. We already know the 800 will look like the N9 thanks to the infamous demo Nokia CEO Stephen Elop gave at Nokia Headquarters in Espoo, Finland in front of a massive crowd where he asked them to “not take pictures”. And we also know that Nokia isn’t even going to make their first 2 million Windows Phones, instead giving that responsibility to Compal. We’ll hear the rest of the important details, such as price and availability, come October 26th at the annual Nokia World event.
As for the Acer … are you kidding? When has anyone taken anything from Acer seriously? Their smartphones are the definition of generic, and so is just about everything else they make. Hey, if they want to make money using the high volume and low margin forumla that many other Asian companies have used to get to the mythical heights that they find themselves at today, then fine. No complaints.
Back to Windows Phone though, what will it take to get people to pay attention to this platform? How many millions, possibly billions, will Microsoft have to blow on marketing?
