For the most part, I truly believe that the Android Market has caught up with the App Store in terms of overall look and feel and app selection but there still are a few exceptions of great apps which only iPhone users can get. Instagram is one of those apps and the program’s 2.0 version just landed and it’s packed full of new features.
The Instagram 2.0 app looks very similar to previous versions when you boot it up but once you go to take a picture, you’ll notice a major change in the camera UI. You now have controls on top of the screen to control the flash, switch which camera you’re using and more. Those wonderful filters now pop up after you’ve taken the picture on the bottom and that UI has also been tweaked for a more user-friendly look and experience.
It’s not just the UI though, as the Instagram 2.0 app offers camera improvements including live filters, instant tilt-shift and high-resolution photos which are up to ten times larger than previous photos. The company said there are also four new filters.
Instagram is a great mobile success story, as the company first started as a bad Foursquare clone before pivoting to photo-sharing with filters. After coming out of the gates strong, Instagram is closing in on 10 million users (including famous users like the Beebs) and that’s quite an accomplishment considering it’s iOS only. The company has said that an Android version will be coming in the future but the variety of camera hardware with Android probably makes it a bit more difficult to pull off than the iOS version.
