Audible is among the first “victims” of Apple’s new policy to charge 30% for in-app purchases, just like it does on app downloads. The audio book service can’t justify such a cut in margins and has decided to provide users with a link to their mobile website instead. This work around solution will definitely cripple the user experience for many folks, hence at least partially hitting profits Audible was making from iPhone users. Then again, as far as I can tell, most of their money comes from subscriptions and the iOS app was used just to download and listen to audiobooks… Actually that’s the way I’m using Audible.
Anyway, you’ve probably already been prompted to update the Audible app and if you still haven’t pushed the button maybe it would be wiser not to take that road at all — that of course is in case you actually buy individual books using Audible’s iOS app.
