RIM outs BlackBerry 9380 and BlackBerry 9790 details

In a developer blog post similar to the one we saw prior to the OS 7 device launch, RIM described the displays for two upcoming BlackBerry devices. The 9380 (which we had seen in glimpses) will have a 3.2-inch 480 x 360 touchscreen in a 4:3 aspect ratio, much like the existing Torch 9800. The 9790, which we’re expecting will be a more entry-level version of the current Bold, will have a 480 x 360 2.4-inch touchscreen – about the same ballpark as the Bold 9780. Both phones will be running BlackBerry 7, which made its debut over the summer with the Bold 9900, Torch 9860, Torch 9810, and Curve 9360.

RIM’s generously offering all of this information to developers who want to start optimizing their apps for the new devices, and have updated simulators accordingly. Any devs in the house can download the 9380 and 9790 simulators in the Developer Zone.

With BlackBerry DevCon next week, it wouldn’t be entirely out of the question to see anouncements for these two phones, but unless they’ll eventually be compatible with QNX (or BBX, as RIM’s new operating system will be called), I think folks will have a hard time getting excited about any new BlackBerry devices. The show will definitely be including QNX smartphones of some kind, as well as an update to the PlayBook operating system. If two more devices were thrown on top of that, I think we’ll have a pretty big show. We’ll be sure to get you guys plenty of pictures and video, whatever RIM announces at DevCon.
