Spotify launches beta BlackBerry app

The hugely popular free, on-demand streaming music service Spotify is finally coming to BlackBerry. Of course, you need a premium subscription to enjoy tunes on mobile, and compatibility for the Spotify app is currently limited to the 9780 Bold, 9700 Bold, 9300 Curve, 9000 Bold, 8520 Curve – sorry, no CDMA handsets or the Torch 9800. Not to mention if you’re in Canada (or anywhere outside of the U.S. or Europe), then you’re out of luck.

Still, all of the usual functions of Spotify are intact: artist, album, and track search, streaming and caching for offline listening, marking favourites, synced playlists, and music sharing through the inbox and Last.fm.

I really can’t say much about Spotify, since I can’t get it back home, but from the sounds of it, the service is awesome. Recently, Facebook plugged in to Spotify, so whatever you’re listening to shows up as a part of the social network’s live news feed. If you’re looking for an alternative, I’d suggest taking a look at Rdio, who already has a fully fleshed-out BlackBerry app.

If you’re interested in trying it out, the Spotify for BlackBerry beta app is available for direct download over here.
