Smartphones are quickly killing off feature phones – study

The Nielsen survey company has collected some pretty solid numbers obtained through its third quarter study, which validate Android as the top dog among smartphone operating systems. In the research study, 43 percent of people polled claimed they owned a smartphone and the same percentage of users reported owning an Android device. This should come to no one’s surprise, as Android continues to outgrow the rest of the competition with a barrage of so many choices on every major and smaller budget sized carrier out there.

As the chart above explains, the rest of the pecking order breaks down with Apple grabbing a 28 percent share of the market, while BlackBerry snatches 18 percent, Windows Phone 7.7 percent, and others making up 4 percent. Judging from the numbers it’s clear to see that for the time being, this is a two horse race with Google Android and Apple iOS competing for world domination.

Other interesting discoveries show the dip in feature phone vs smartphone. The truth is, younger people are buying smartphones in droves – much more quickly than older generations. The Nielsen study found 62 percent of consumers aged 25-34 report owning a smartphone, while the number is about 54 percent for users 18-24 and 35-44. The future will definitely carry more smartphones, as basic feature phones begin to fizzle out.
