Encyclopaedia Britannica released an official app for the iPhone and iPod touch to give users access to over 80,000 articles overflowing with knowledge. Not long after the announcement that the encyclopedia would be released for iPad, it’s now been downsized for the remaining iOS devices. There’s already a few similar apps in the App Store, but nothing has been official until now.

The app is nicely designed with some handy features helpful for browsing and reading through articles. The Home tab has what appears to be a Bing-inspired search function with a photograph in the background. Some brief information on the photo and the day in history is also provided. My Britannica  can keep track of your favorite articles for easy access next time. When reading content, the app includes images, diagrams, and charts for certain topics, and a LinkMap for exploring related topics.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica app is free to download and gets you 100 full-length articles and the first 100 words of the rest. To read the encyclopedia in its entirety, you’ll have to subscribe for $1.99 per month using in-app subscriptions. If you are a student, educator, or even just a natural learning enthusiast, it might be worth checking out.

In other news, Google and its index of information is still free.
